Deep-subaqueous implosive volcanism at West Mata seamount, Tonga

چکیده

Deep subaqueous volcanic eruptions (>500 m below sea level (mbsl)) remain enigmatic due to a lack of visual observations and difficulty recreating ambient conditions in the lab. Eruptive activity at West Mata seamount May 2009 remains one two deep have ever been filmed. A distinct low-intensity eruptive style, termed bubble escape activity, was observed Hades vent (1200 mbsl) characterized by ascent implosion 0.2 - 1 diameter volatile-filled vapor bubbles (Resing et al., 2011). Video this is used constrain simple numerical models produce first eruption actualistic model driven observations. Bubble occurs three stages defined changing exsolved volatile lava behavior. During Stage 1, magma filled conduit drives either ductile or brittle deformation surface vent, depending on timescale cooling prior activity. Fragmentation during 2 culminates with coming into direct contact water. At point, 3, implode through rapid condensation contraction phase, heat loss from Numerical modeling expansion vents across ocean depth range has identified transition characteristics 5 MPa. This would fundamental change processes, which shallow end members are defined. highlights implosive behavior underpressure that develops as key, but often overlooked, component both pyroclastic effusive volcanism entire range. stands contrast overpressure driving subaerial explosive eruptions. The fact volatiles can expand, contract, maintain an approximately constant volume also calls for careful application terminology (e.g. explosive) describe processes.

Hydroacoustic investigationof submarine landslides at West Mata volcano, Lau Basin

Submarine landslides are an important process in volcano growth yet are rarely observed and poorly understood. We show that landslides occur frequently in association with the eruption of West Mata volcano in the NE Lau Basin. These events are identifiable in hydroacoustic data recorded between ~5 and 20 km from the volcano and may be recognized in spectrograms by the weak and strong powers at ...

Long-term explosive degassing and debris flow activity at West Mata submarine volcano

WestMata is a 1200mdeep submarine volcano where explosive boninite eruptions were observed in 2009. The acoustic signatures from the volcano’s summit eruptive vents Hades and Prometheus were recorded with an in situ (~25m range) hydrophone during ROV dives in May 2009 and with local (~5 km range) moored hydrophones between December 2009 and August 2011. The sensors recorded low frequency (1–40 ...

Observed deep energetic eddies by seamount wake

Despite numerous surface eddies are observed in the ocean, deep eddies (a type of eddies which have no footprints at the sea surface) are much less reported in the literature due to the scarcity of their observation. In this letter, from recently collected current and temperature data by mooring arrays, a deep energetic and baroclinic eddy is detected in the northwestern South China Sea (SCS) w...

Deep-Focus Repeating Earthquakes in the Tonga–Fiji Subduction Zone

Abstract Deep-focus earthquakes in the Tonga–Fiji subduction zone make up greater than 66% of the globally recorded deep seismicity. The high number of deep-focus seismicity in this active subduction zone allows us to search for deep-focus similar earthquake pairs and repeating earthquakes. We compile a waveform dataset for deep earthquakes with magnitude above 4.7 occurring in the Tonga–Fiji–K...
